More About the Region:

Sutherland

The Sutherland Shire, located on Sydney’s southern coast, has emerged as an impressive conferencing location.

Just 25km south of the CBD and only 20 minutes from Sydney airport, ‘the Shire’ as the area is affectionately know, will provide your conference with all the best Sydney has to offer: famous beaches, iconic waterways, rich bushland, and exciting venues.

The Shire’s many attractions include:

· Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell where Lt James Cook first stepped ashore this continent in 1770, and etched in Australia’s history as the meeting place of two cultures. Invite your delegates to meet in Australia’s most significant ‘Meeting Place’!
· Cronulla! Legendary surf breaks, boutique shopping, relaxed outdoor dining, and the only Sydney beach accessible by train.
· Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and the nearby famous ‘eat street’ Gymea Bay Road.
· Historic, secluded Como, a real gem of the Shire.
· The villages of Bundeena and Maianbar, nestled between the ocean and the bush, offering visitors a mix of romantic and bohemian flair.
· Australia’s first National Park, the Royal National Park. Head to nature and enjoy a real journey back in time exploring the area’s Indigenous heritage, or that of a more decadent era of picnics and rowboats.

A dynamic calendar of festivals and celebrations reflect the lifestyle and culture of those who call the Shire home.

The Bundeena Maianbar Art of Living festival showcases the artistic talents of village residents, among them well known artists and Archibald prizewinners. Cronulla is famous for its Australia Day celebrations that feature the spectacular Opera on the Beach. Other events that capture the vibrancy of Sutherland Shire include:
- Parc Menai Celtic Festival, celebrating all things Celtic
- Sutherland Shire Heritage Festival and the Festival of Kurnell, both celebrations of the natural, built and cultural heritage of the Shire
- The Sutherland Shire Film Festival and Cronulla Shorts which offers a unique challenge to filmmakers.
- Cronulla Spring Festival

Along with its tourism attractions, Sutherland Shire has all the services and facilities needed to make your conference a success.

A number of major conference and accommodation facilities are available in Cronulla. Rydges Cronulla and Quest Apartments offer all the services of a ‘big city’ property, but in a more relaxed beachside atmosphere. Over 40 restaurants and cafes in walking distance of the major hotels will find you the perfect location, funky or formal, for an evening function.

In Bundeena, Maianbar, and the Royal National Park there are several facilities that allow delegates to feel away from it all while still remaining within a stone’s throw of the metropolitan area. A selection of bed and breakfast and cottage accommodation provides a unique overnight experience or alternatively the charming Bundeena ferry could be used to transport from Cronulla.

At the centre of the Shire is the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, a modern and dynamic space. Along with open areas for more informal functions, the Gallery boasts a theatrette with multimedia capabilities and the popular onsite Café can fulfil catering needs.

There are many other venues and facilities available throughout the Shire from the stately Como Hotel to a variety of licensed clubs or, for larger groups, the Sutherland Entertainment Centre. The Shire also offers numerous activities to entertain and challenge your delegates, from relaxing cruises on the Port Hacking and Georges Rivers, to the more adventurous activities of sea kayaking or deep-sea fishing. Or for a fun afternoon, why not take out a floating “Party Pontoon” complete with BBQ!
